Something is stripping my plants! (New gardener help!)

Hello. I have just got my first garden and am very new to gardening. Something is stripping my plants . It started with some sunflower seedlings and I thought maybe slugs, but I have just looked at a rose bush (at least that is what I think it is- it was buried in the garden when I moved in) and something looks to have stripped all the leaves off leaving just stalks. It is tied up to the fence and everything has gone from mid level. Something has also had a new plant I put it and had all the flowers off it.
I looked on the underside of some different flowers and there look to be black bugs?
Any idea on what it is and how I can tackle it? I am feeling disheartened about growing anything :(

    Hello Elizabeth  :)
It's possibly several different types of insects attacking your plants. The rose bush
(if that's what it is ) could have been eaten by a type of something called a sawfly.

If possible, please can you post a couple of photos just so we can get an idea ? Click on the "mountain" icon above the message box and follow the instruction .
We can start from there  :)

Please don't get disheartened, gardening has its highs and lows, and this year has produced many challenges for all of us. You will find it rewarding l promise, you just need to find out what works for you, as opposed to whoever gardened there before

I had a similar experience with my rose, and I think it was the small green caterpillars (don't know the exact name) that have been eating all the leaves, leaving a bare stem. There were aphids too but I don't think their damage was as big as the caterpillars.

Think young plants need more attention and care against pests. When they grow bigger and stronger they can outgrow aphids/slugs.

I just started gardening this year myself too. I've not been buying very expensive or mature plants. Just experimenting with growing from seeds and young plug plants and see what happens. Learned a few lessons with frost/slugs/aphids for sure but I think that's all part of the precious learning experience  :)
