Ideas please?

We have a access sewage manhole in our garden. Unfortunately the garden at some point was lowered, before us, and the access surrounding the manhole is raised. We have put artificial turf on it as no grass will grow on it due to it being built on concrete rings which stretch 6+ metres down, however it now looks like Teletubby land! We want to cover the surrounding area with shrubs etc yet still maintain access when the water company does a check. Ideas please welcome, many thanks Claire

Hi @dietitianclaire. Is the post easily removed?
If so, you could construct a moveable raised bed which you can plant up with whatever you fancy. You could then restrict the shrubs, or any permanent planting, to just a couple of sides of the manhole, with the container visible from whichever side/angle suits you best. It also avoids any problems with encroaching roots etc, depending on what you plant.
If you like, you can put the container on wheels or castors for moving, but a couple of handles, and someone to help you lift it, is just as easy. The height of the container is probably best kept to around 30cm/1 foot, to prevent it being too heavy. Alternatively, you can make it higher, but put the base about half way up to give enough planting depth. It would depend on the look you want and what planting you prefer.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
