Ground elder

I have a considerable growth of ground elder in grass around some young fruit trees.
I am thinking of applying some roundup gel to the ground elder. Will this affect the fruit trees and will the glyphosate get into any fruit. Any help, please?

No, as long as you only paint it on the ground elder leaves.  Glyphosate works by being absorbed thru foliage and then taken down to the roots.  It becomes inert on contact with soil.

However, before you do any of that I would advise clearing a 60cm/2' radius of soil around the trunk of each tree as grass and weeds will provide competition for nutrients and moisture that the trees need to grow well.   You can keep the circles weed free by applying a mulch of gravel, chipped bark or well-rotted manure as you see fit but, before you mulch, first make sure each tree has a good long drink (30 to 50 litres depending on size) so you don't lock in dryness at the roots.
