Front Garden Ideas

Good morning,
I would appreciate any views on how to change my front garden for the better.  As will be seen from the photograph, my front garden is on a slope, mainly grass going down to a border full of penstemons.  The grass has deteriorated over the years (mining bees digging holes and Birds-foot trefoil becoming established) and the border, originally with roses and other shrubs has become more difficult to maintain as I get older.
Any ideas gratefully received.

My first comment would be, do you want to keep the grass, or would you consider reducing the size of of it ?
There are many ideas for a low maintenance garden, it looks a sunny site so l would suggest plants along the lines of lavenders and salvias. It would be fairly easy to come up with plants for year round interest, from bulbs for Spring colour to ornamental grasses for Autumn and Winter interest.
    A few suggestions here

Does the slope run down towards the bed or is it more left to right ? Any chance of another photo looking up the slope please ?

The penstemons look great. As for mining bees and birds foot trefoil, could you change your expectations to allow for a slightly less neat, but more wildlife friendly garden? You could even get a few other things going in the grass and maintain as a low flowering lawn. (Keeping some areas of sparse grass for the mining bees)...

  • AnniD & Loxley,
Many thanks for both of your comments/ideas.  I shall give these some thought over the next few weeks.
    Thank you both once again.
