Dahlias From Seed

In the past I have grown dahlias from tubers. However, after losing a few to bad weather over the winter, I thought that next year I might try growing them from seed. That being so, I was just wondering what mixtures people have found produce the best display, regardless of the pictures in the catalogues.

Bishops Children, dark leaves, really vivid flowers, some single, some semi double.

Absolutely - I've been sowing and growing Bishops Children for years.
The tropical colours are vibrant and a great contrast to the dark foliage.
Those that survive the winter grow into substantial plants by the following year

I liked Bishop's Children too and most survived the winter in the ground. I also liked Yankee Doodle Dandy, pretty flowers with a ruffle in the middle.

    Same for me too.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Thank you for all the answers Looks like Bishops Children then. If I sow them at, say the beginning of March, will they make decent sized flowering plants in the same year?

Yes - I sowed mine on 27 March this year using a heated propagator.
A few have been in flower for about 2 weeks now
The following year the plants are wider and taller

The pic above was taken on 12 August from seed sown earlier that year
