@fizzyliz You didn't do anything wrong cutting back to the first leaf. The leaves photsynthesize which helps the plant.
Any plant cut down to the ground at this time of year will start to grow some leaves back.

@gondor thanks 😊 just learning about gardening and caring for plants, all ver new to me! My indoor plants are all fantastic but not doing so well with the outdoor ones…
so do I cut all stems off to the ground even if leaves on (albeit not the best looking leaves) or should I leave any that do have that first leave on?
    Thanks again! 😊

Yes - perfectly normal for new growth to come through. In some areas, and on a mature plant, cutting back after flowering results in new growth and a further flush of flowers. Climate and conditions are the main factors in that.
It doesn't happen everywhere because of those - shorter season and not enough time for it to happen   :)

@fizzyliz It's up to you. I didn't cut my delphiniums right back to the ground, just back to the leaves. My leaves look a lot better than yours so if you dont like the look of your plant you can cut everything back and it wlll regrow. I cut mine back (to the leaves, not the ground) a few weeks ago and there are some new flower buds.

@gondor I’m sure they do look better hehe! Thank you 😊 going to have a look at them now. Thank you @gondor abs @Fairygirl x
  • I cut mine down to the ground probably about a month ago, it had made 3 flowers. It is now already back full height with a flower about to open! So you may have got some more flowers from doing it sooner, maybe you still will?!

@Crazybeelady that’s amazing!! 🤩 quick growers then! Would love to see a picture! And one of what it looked like cut down… what happens to them over winter? Thanks 😀

They just die back over winter. Perennial   :)
How much they come back depends on when they've flowered and how much season is left for them to produce more.

  • @fizzyliz here it is now, I'm afraid I didn't take a picture when I cut it down.  I'm trying to think if I'm underestimating how long ago I cut it down.  But I'm it was only a matter of weeks, it came back quick.
