Conifer problem

My dad has had conifers in his garden for well over 20 years, as he is getting on in years and the conifers have reached over 12 ft in height and 6 ft in width, he has decided to trim them back to a manageable height! The result is a big brown untidy mess, we have all told him they should now be removed but he is convinced they will recover. Any advice or opinions welcome!

I shouldn’t think they will grow back. Not sure what type of conifer they are but if they are of the lalandii family the top might grow but that’s it
  • They won't grow back. The top may grow but the portions that have been cut back to the trunk will never regenerate.

No. That will remain a hideous mess.
Hopefully after a year or so when they still look like that, he might realise and accept that he'll have to get them taken out.
Perhaps you could let him read this thread   ;)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you all for your responses, I am definitely going to show him these messages in the hope we can persuade him they all need to go!!! Fingers crossed 🤞🏼
