What looks like a coastal grass is continuously consuming my plants and growing all over my stones

Hi all,

I'm looking for some help firstly to identify what I think looks like a coastal grass which is consuming my stones at that are laid on the front of my garden. The whole garden has a stones over it, but this particular 'grass', has only appeared over the last couple of years. It is at least a 3 hour job every 3 weeks to clear it and pull them out. Can anyone identify it and tell me how I might be able to get rid or at least minimise it please?

Thanks

Horsetail. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix.
You can try crushing the foliage and applying a good weedkiller, but it travels underground and survives everything. It's been around longer than anything on earth, so it's supreme survivor.  :)

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Don’t know how you’ll get rid of that without a lot of work. At aQ and A with Allen Titchmarsh I asked how to get rid of that and also couch grass. His answer was ‘about six feet of concrete ‘   Good luck .
  • Thank you for everyones responses. You've been a great help. I will persist with weeding for now, until I lose my mind with it and then have to flag the front garden, which I didn't want to have to do  :(

Flagging doesn't stop it, it comes up in the cracks.  Tarmac doesn't stop it either.  It doesn't seem to survive mowing every three days, so maybe if you can pull it out on a very regular basis you might weaken it.
  • The problem didn’t exist until approximately two years ago. There is rental property next door where the weed was first identified. It’s now spread from their garden into mine and the adjacent property. It’s also all over the back driveway area as well.

I wouldn't spend three hours every three weeks, I would develop the habit of pulling a bit up every time I walked by it, a few minutes each day.
