Sprouting from the bottom

I bought 5 bare root fruit trees, mostly apple. 4 have started growing straight away, I thought the 5th was dead. Leaves have started growing from the bottom, not sure what to do with it? Can I save it?

The shoot that has appeared looks like it's coming from the rootstock as the shoot is below the graft so it will not be the tree you bought - which is the stem above the graft.

Yes - that will possibly be a much more vigorous tree too. Definitely won't be what you bough, as @Pete.8 says.
Is there no top growth on that one at all? If not, then contact the supplier with photos of the whole tree.
The growing medium doesn't look particularly good though. Is it just compost? Trees in pots need a good, soil based medium if they're going to be there long term.  :)

In my opinion, that tree has been planted too deep. The graft union should be at least 1 inch above the soil level - the reason is to prevent the scion from sending out its own roots into the soil and therefore bypassing the benefits conveyed by the chosen rootstock.

Scratch the bark of the trunk or a branch of the scion. If it is green and moist underneath then that part is still alive. If it is brown (some times white) and dry then that part is dead.

Don't despair even if the scion is dead. Just continue to grow on the rootstock for this year.

Next March, just graft on a branch taken from one of your other trees.
