Wisteria problems

We planted a wisteria ‘amethyst falls’ about 12-months ago, and it flowered really well late spring, however it hasn’t thrown out any whippey vines for us to train it up the pergola, does anyone know what’s wrong?

I saw similarly sized ‘amethyst falls’ at a garden nursery and it had whippey vines shooting out all over. We water well during the hot periods and fertilise it once or twice a month.

You need to give the Wisteria time to establish - looking at your photo, it has a fair bit of competition from your other planting.
Give it time and continue to ensure it is well watered.

Thanks, yes the perennials have gone crazy this year, it is mostly leggy foliage, so isn’t as bad as the photo makes out 🙂

Yes.  I agree.  It's still a youngster so needs to spend time putting down its roots and then it'll start producing growth up top.   It does have a lot of competition for water and nutrients so keep it watered in hot dry spells and stop feeding now.   Give it a good mulch this autumn and some slow release BF&B or rose or tomato food in spring.
