Sucker or Cane?

Dear Gardeners
Apologies, I seek your help and this is probably a basic questions.
I have attached a picture of the base of the climbing rose.  Are the green shoots suckers or a new cane that will provide stunning blooms?  The tips of the leaves are reddish if that offers any clues.
Many thanks
Jason

Those look to me like fantastic new canes ... plenty of thorns and reddish new growth ... I'd be leaving them.

Out of interest, do you know which rose that is?

  • Thank you so much for your reply.  In answer to your question, I don't know which rose it is.  I know it is a climbing Rose that produces beautiful yellow blooms.  It has formed a lovely arch leading to the rear of my garden and I love it.  I never really know what to cut back or if I need to feed it.

@marlorena and @nollie really know about roses ... they could help with the pruning/training question.  If you post some photos of the buds,  flowers and leaves they might be able to ID it for you.
