Grapevine growing

Hello everyone,

I've just moved into a new house and there is a grapevine growing up one leg of the pergola. The Grapevine has a woody trunk which has been chopped about 2 feet from the floor by the previous owners for unknown reasons.

The Grapevine has now shooted multiple stems from the hard wood.

Am I right in thinking that I only want 1 hard wood stem going up to the top of the pergola and then to train the vines across the pergola? How do I achive this, do I need to cut back all shoots apart from one?

Thanks
Tom

    Hello and welcome.
We have a pergola with white wine grapes. At each post there is a vine. The vines are now at least 30 years old. 2 of them decided enough was enough and gave up. Trying to find white replacements in nurseries was a no go but managed to pick one up in Wilkco!!!! and the other in Aldi. They are doing brilliantly.
To begin with we watched to see the strongest growth and then cut out the others. This was then attached to the post and as it grew then to the overhead section.
Any new growths appearing below were rubbed out.
Be careful that you take one growth for training that isn't near the ground as this could possibly be a runner if the vine has been grafted.
The vines are summer pruned and after harvest and leaf die back the vines are all cut right back to the main growths ready for the spring growth.
We use the leaves to make stuffed vine leaves...lovely.... and the grapes for many lovely bottles of wine.
    Enjoy.

thanks so much for your welcome and advice, I will look to take the runners back and then just try create 1 vertical stem. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Thanks
