Roof moss or mulch

My landlord had the whole roof cleaned yesterday of moss and lichens etc resulting in 5 huge bags of cleared vegetation.  Is there any reason why this can't be used to improve the dreadful soil in the garden or could it be toxic in any way?

I can't see that moss would really improve soil meaningfully - not in large quantities anyway.  A small amount would certainly do no harm though. It's unlikely to be toxic unless there's been chemicals of some kind on the roof   :)
I have loads of moss here which just grows naturally everywhere, but if I needed to shift it for some reason, I'd put it in the compost bin. Lichens would be the same, although generally I would leave them where they are if I had any.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
