Ferrula Communis

I planted it last November among some Helenium Moerheim. At first it was doing well but now seems to have either not developed or  lost its flower stalk and its foliage is overshadowed by the Moerheim.  Do I try move it to give it more space and sun or leave it and hope for the best either this year or maybe next ? I am thinking of swopping  it with a Sambuca Nigra which looks more robust.

Do you have a photo of it?
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Looking uo close it might be dying! As I was trying to photograph it among the Moerheim one of the stalks came loose and I just pulled it out ! Maybe too shaded by the other plants  ?

I'd asked for a photo to see how much space it had. Giant fennel needs space and sunshine and a well drained soil. It is a hardy perennial but it usually dies down after flowering.

Sambucus Nigra is a completely different sort of plant. It's quite a large shrub and quite fast growing. Black Lace is a lovely one with dark divided leaves and flat pink flowerheads.

I'm not sure that in a flowerbed with heleniums and not much space is right for either.

  • I thnk you are right about the fennel being crowded by the heleniums but the Black Lace which I have is already 50cm tall so do you thnk it might be Ok in the middle of the heleniuns if I clear it some space?
