Senecio Angel Wings leaves getting green patches

Hi, I’m hoping someone will advise me on my Newly purchased Senecio Angel Wings, which is developing green patches on its silvery leaves. It is in a container in compost in the garden, and I cannot see any evidence of invasion with any insects or other creatures on its leaves (both sides) or on the soil. I attach photos with fingers crossed for a solution for this beautiful plant! Thank you.

    Hello.

That's slug, snail damage, I have had the same problem, but I went out at night to check and caught the culprits.

Cut off the damaged leaves as it spoils the look of the plant!

Hello and thanks Braidman. I find that is a huge surprise. I would have thought I’d see evidence of holes and chewed bits….. The appearance to me is as though the silvery fine hairs have been “rubbed off” revealing the green leaf just smooth and bare! I will take action however thank you!

We had the same problem plus Ants so I gave them the good news with a dash of Washing up liquid and water then the next day some pest spray.  No sign of them since.

    Hi
It is slugs or snails rasping the tender surface off the leaves, nothing more, nothing less!

I too have trouble with ants and them milking black fly, though a spray with insecticide soon sorts out that problem.

I find them very difficult to over winter, last winter I started out with six young plants, the parent had rotted before I could bring it into the GH, the young plants died one by one, luckily one survived and I have a few young plants growing on now!

Thank you Braidman for your very helpful response. I have taken action against both slugs etc and ants! Shame to hear of the problem of over wintering, I, obviously mistakenly, was under the impression that they were easier/hardier than that but 🤞see what result I get. Thanks again.
  • good evening, I’m so glad o e found your responses mine has done the same, I’ve had it years and it’s not happened before. Thanks. Also for the black fly problem, if you mix crushed garlic and water in a sprayer and spray the plants it gets rid of them eco friendly. 😊
  • Hello Clare, I’m so jealous that this is the first time you’ve had problems. I definitely witnessed slugs having a party! Mine looks worse than ever now towards end of Jan. I’ve no experience of what to do when spring comes but have decided just to cut off the leaves that look awful and damaged and see what happens. Do or die! I used garlic mix and I also know what to do with my egg shells now! But Welsh slugs are very determined! Good luck!
