Discoloured Strawberries

BigladBiglad Posts: 3,265
Haven't had many ripe strawberries yet, but the odd one is turning brown rather than red. This is new to me. Is it rot/mould brought on by this year's weather conditions?

Is the discolouration soft ?  If so, they will continue to rot and best whipped off now and discarded.
Rubbish weather and not enough air around the plants could be one reason.

    Thanks both.

They weren't soft but I've cut them off and chucked them in the garden waste.

The plants are well spaced out but there's probably been enough rubbish weather to cause problems.

Just to show how the strawberries (plus blackberry bush) were planted at the end of last year. Although everything is obviously a lot bigger now, I don't think that spacing/airflow will be the problem.

They certainly appear to be well spaced so maybe the weather or just "one of those things".
I've been pleased enough with mine so far and they are nothing like as tidy as yours tho I have been limited to trough growing in this new garden.
Fingers crossed yours will pick up soon and produce some goodies :)

Thanks @philippasmith2. I'll keep a sharper look out for any that are going brown from now on. There's a lot of fruit on the 24 plants in that border so I should start to get some healthy fruit soon. Fingers crossed the hot, dry spell kicks them all on over the next week or two.

Funnily enough I couldn't bring myself to bin a couple of old plants (probably over 10 years old) and chucked them in an old council recycling tub round the side of the house (I needed the pots that they were in). The soil was 'leftovers' and they've had no attention whatsoever (from me, pests or critters!). Of course, last week they both started producing nice, large, juicy red fruits :D They're delicious!

Sod's Law - sometimes I think it applies to gardening more than anything else - I can almost see you scoffing them from here :D
