Repairing / Re-seeding lawn

My lawn has sporadic brown patches most of which were caused by Ant nests and some weeds with small purple flowers.  I am looking for a working solution to repair them without taking out the entire lawn.

Given this is the first time I have taken up this task.  I am not sure were to start.  Do I sprinkle lawn seed and cover it with top soil?  Is Miracle-Gro evergreen complete 4 in 1 contain seeds as well?  Or do I sprinkle lawn seeds and feed them with lawn feed?

Would appreciate some directions.  Thanks

Rake off as much as you can of the brown stuff and rough up the bare soil, then add seed with a bit of topsoil or compost, and keep it well-watered until the new grass is established. For this reason it might be better to wait until September unless you live in an area with high summer rainfall.
Feed&weed products don't contain seed, and if used incorrectly they will do more harm than good. The soil needs to be moist, the grass growing well, they need to be spread thinly and evenly with no overdosing, and they need to be watered in at the correct time after applying. And they shouldn't be used on new grass from seed until it's well-established (probably next year for grass sown now or this autumn). You can get pre-seeding fertiliser but unless your soil is very poor, I don't think it's really necessary.

    Thank you @JennyJ. Much appreciated.
  • The only thing I’ll add is keep an eye on birds, I put some netting over my reseeded patch. Watering is very important during this dry spell and I had an automatic sprinkler set for three 5minute sprays a day.
