Amelanchier leaves skeletonized

Something is happening to our amelanchier tree, the leaves are turning into skeletons! I found a couple of weird slug type grub things on the leaves too, one yellowy brown one and a black one. Does anyone know what this is and how I can help it recover?
thanks so much

Hi - it looks like the damage caused by saw fly caterpillars, but I don't know if there are specific ones for Amelanchier.

I am no expert but if the black insect on your picture has a creamy yellow on the underside it may be a  a willow leaf beetle. The damage is caused by the larvae which graze away part of the leaf surface causing the remaining tissue to dry up and turn brown or white. The garden centre might sell you a specific insecticide or try and remove them by hand. I think the tree should survive it.

  • Thanks @Pianoplayer I’ll have a look for something to get rid of them gently, I’ve picked off the grubs that I can see too
