Sorry about the orientation. This beautiful intriguing plant appeared in our garden this year: we are guessing that it is a gift from the birds! Can anyone identify it , please?

    Is it a perennial?

    Looks like verbascum phoenicum which is a short lived perennial that comes in whites, pinks and purples.   It self seeds happily but isn't a thug and you can collect the seed to sow in trays if you want to control where it grows.

    Thank you for your help. I will try to collect some seeds as we really love the plant and its intricate little flowers. Good for bees and hoverflies, too!

    I'm going to try this winter as mine is right at the front of the border, and it needs to be a bit farther back
