Is there something wrong with this strawberry plant

It's Elsanta. Pictures of this type online show much bigger leaves. Been in the ground for a couple of months now.

I can’t see a strawberry plant there.   Have you got your photos muddled up?

No, the tall plant is the strawberry one. Sorry, it posted sideways, not sure why.

    That isn't a strawberry.

This is a strawberry plant, I think you have a jolly large weed there!

Let me guess, it's grown from seed?
Looking up the variety listed in top post online I kind of see where this misconception comes from heh... It's a scam directed towards novice gardeners.
If you google that variety that's what comes up as photos on many sites and all of them are "omg ! almost gone!" :

    It's almost sad really ...

Although it is technically not an altered photo, it IS a manipulation. It is a lie and misconception sold on visuals only. Strawberries are NOT trees, nor they are SUCCULENTS ... neither bonsai heh..
Seeing this makes me want to take a shower :( really gross practice from unreputable stores. Same as seed for blue and rainbow roses or various colors of bleeding hearts ...  ugh.

to @m02098975ANocN3A you unfortunately were sold a lie.
Even if seeds were actually of any strawberry at all, they would never grow as a tree. What you most likely had seen on photo while getting seeds was a planter made out of pipe with a multitude of plants in it, which eventually grew dense enough to cover the planter completely.

I just hope that doesn't make you too upset and make you stop gardening/
Growing strawberries from seeds in general is a long and fiddly process IMHO. You can always get very cheap live plants, often even from grocery stores. Or you can try to collect seeds from strawberries you eat and love the flavor of.  Or ask for some young plants from someone as they are thinned down annually and people are getting rid of them regularly so so they don't have too many plants. They'll probably just give them to you rather than compost them.

If it's not the fake seeds as Lena suggests, then maybe they are referring to the strawberry tree, arbutus unedo?
@Lena love that hedgehog in your pic! Cute!

It wouldn't be sold as 'Elsanta' if it was astrobus.
Still, leaf doesn't check either even for astrobus :( Wrong shape, not rigid, not waxy...  But we'll only know when OP comes back.

@gondor really happy you get a kick out my hog hehe. I miss them dearly T_T Real shame there aren't any real ones in US. I'm really surprised mine still has paint on him through the years

  • Thanks folks. I got the plant from Lidl. It looked like a strawberry plant at first.

Then I would carefully remove that plant and any others that don’t look like strawberry plants. The original strawberry might still be there, struggling to survive amongst the weeds. Give it some tlc now and it’ll be able to give you fruit next year. 🍓 😀

It wasn't grown from seed. I'm almost certain it was Elsanta. As I say, bought from a local supermarket. It looked like a strawberry plant at first. It is quite rough to the touch now. Should I dig it up?
