Beetroot

Hello, I grow beetroot every year and make my neighbours quite envious with the fabulous crops I produce. But this year 3 plants have managed to pop their heads up. After a failure with the first packet of seeds, I planted another packet and still nothing. I just can't understand what the problem can be!
Any ideas? Both Bolthardy, of which I have  grown before.😣

I have grown mine in root trainers and planted them out and they are growing well and I have another lot sown in modules in greenhouse. It maybe the season we are having days of hot dry weather followed by cold winds it just dries everything up. I have had the same issues with my carrots only two plants out of two rows.

We weren't able to sow outdoors until June because of the cold weather. Poor germination but I then inter sowed in the spaces and now nearly got a row!!
Looking at others harvest photos they are already harvesting beetroot. Will be many weeks before we can.
  • Thank you for your responses, it's been a strange year indeed.
  • Do you rotate or plant in the same place every year and do you replenish with compost during winter?
Sadly, it could also be weedkiller residue in bought in compost.
  • I do rotate my crops yes, but I'm wondering if the weed killer compost residue might be the problem.
Last year I didn't compost over winter I think that might be an issue too.
  •  <snip> but I'm wondering if the weed killer compost residue might be the problem. <snip>
I fear it's more prevalent than the horticultural industry is willing to admit.

I grew beets to harvest for the first time this year ( not without trying before)
I direct sowed in late March,  but covered the bed with my coldframe until late May, only opening it in warmer days in April,  so I think this year its been too cold for most plants.
