Something dreadful has happened to our Cherry Toms !?

Hi everyone,

We have developed an awful problem with our Cherry Tomatoes and we do not have a clue what it is ? Last year we had the most wonderful crop, but this year about 2 weeks ago the leaves started to wilt, they turned silver/grey and limp (not dry) and now virtually all of the leaves are affected and what tomatoes there are are turning brown 😣 I am watering in the same way as I did last year, the only thing noticeably different is our awful weather, wet and cold.

I have attached some pictures, can anyone help identify the problem ? Thanks !

Iy looks like tomato blight to me but I could be wrong. If it is, you will have to bin the lot and dispose of the debris in the Council green bin not your compost bin. Sorry.

😣How awful ! So I guess that is a result of the horrendously wet weather we have been having this last couple of months !?

If we bin them, when, are there any precautions we can take to stop a new planting of toms catching the same thing ?

It's a weather related problem, and the blackened stems are the most obvious clue. The spores are airborne, and are present in the soil most of the time anyway. The wet weather just makes it more transmissible. Rare in greenhouse grown ones for that reason.
Don't compost the plants in  your own compost bin either - burn them or put in a local council bin if you have a scheme like that there.

It's sometimes wise to plant in a different place the following year as the spores can remain.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Once removed is there anything we can do to 'disinfect' the tunnel so another planting will not be affected ?
