What is eating my hedge and how do I stop it?

Hi all

Been working away a bit so somewhat ignored my hedge. It's been planted for about 2.5 years now from 50cm pot grown Golden Privett and its realy taken off this year. I have pruned it a couple of times to let it get thicker before it gets higher.

Was watering it recently and noticed a few chewed leaves but not many. Have been away for most of a month and now notice something has had a field day with the leaves.

If its leaf cutter bees or similar then they can crack on but I think the missing bits are too small for them.
A bit of googling shows Vine weevil as a likely suspect.

This is about a 7m hedge up to a brick wall directly on the other side of the wall in my garden I have honeysuckle, this also has similarly damage but not as much, nothing else shows damage yet.

In your opinion is this vine weevil?
I have ordered some Nematode stuff to try as my cat spends a lot of time under the hedge so would rather not use anything nasty.

It's mostly at the back of the hedge this is a lot thinner because it gets way less sun than the front.

Any advice would be great.

    Vine weevil perhaps?

Yes … classic adult vineweevil damage.

    Thanks all for the clarification.

What's the best way of ridding my hedge of them?

I have ordered some Nematodes from Amazon and will give this a try. Is there anything better you can suggest?

Nematodes sorted them out here … if I remember correctly two doses at specified interval. Just make sure the holes in your watering can rose are big enough or the nematodes will clog it up and not get onto the ground.

You apply it to the soil not the hedge … some people get confused about that.

Nematodes are the best bet, just follow the instructions and you'll be fine. If for any reason they can't be applied straight away, they can be stored in the fridge until the expiry date (usually 2 to 3 weeks l think).

Perfect thanks, I have some being delivered on Tuesday and will be home so will get on it..

Can you over treat with Nematodes?

Not that l'm aware of. The packet should have all the information you need and as long as you apply it in the ratio as stated, it's fine.
