Agree, not JKW! If there are several in a line, try following (both ways) and see if you arrive at a shrub/tree or indeed an old stump. I'd investigate one by digging down and seeing if they have their own roots (in which case dig them out) or if they are attached to a horizontal root. If the latter, you can try physically pulling them off of the main root, which is supposed to make them less likely to re-sprout than cutting them off cleanly.
Edit: I'll just add that cherry tree roots can survive for many years after a tree has been removed, just in case that's a possibility.
