Looks like it's dangerously too close to the pavement!

It's possibly been cut back, or damaged, at some point and has produced more trunks. They will produce side shoots anyway up the main trunk.
They grow right next to pavements round here without it causing any major problems, as, apart from a deep taproot, most of the roots are quite shallow. There are plenty of other trees whose roots cause far greater problems with nearby pavements.

I love them, although I know many people don't.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Ty for that. It was only about 6 inches when we planted it. Has just grown like that we haven’t cut it back. We keep an eye to make sure it isn’t growing outside our garden and cut tips of branch if it is. Have had it 30+ years. Students near, particularly Chinese, stop to take pictures. We love it

    Enjoy it  :)
It's possibly just some of the sideshoots that have carried on growing then. Some people remove all the lower branches to raise the canopy too. There's some lovely specimens near me.  They grow well in our climate  :)

There are some fantastic ones at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

One of the gardeners there gave me a few seeds which I planted 2 years ago.
    Nothing showing .... yet
    I am a half-full glass type ... so I live in hope.
