How many seedlings can a pip produce?

I'm relatively new to gardening and growing stuff from seeds so this seems fascinating to me: A few months ago I planted four orange pips in a small pot. By now they've all germinated into nice little seedlings. As I was transplanting them into individual pots yesterday, I found that I got eight seedlings! One pip with just one seedling, two with two, and another pip even produced three tangled seedlings. Wondering what's making the difference...

Here's what they looked like a while ago (one is just germinating, at the bottom). If you look hard enough you can probably see that the left and right ones at the top actually have two seedlings each:

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Could still be many years away though!
