Dividing hardy geranium

Hello,

im about to cut geranium ‘Patricia’ right back to about an inch or so above the ground as it’s almost stopped flowering.

is it possible to split the plant and transplant half somewhere else at the same time or should this be done in the autumn?

    You could divide it now as you have cut it back. Geraniums are fairly forgiving.

    Do it while you're thinking about it. I think I would chop chunks out with a spade rather than lifting and splitting the whole plant, and fill the gaps with some soil of compost. Keep it all well-watered if we get a dry spell.

    One benefit of a wet summer is that it’s great growing weather for roots  so I wouldn’t hesitate to split it now. Give it a good soak and it’ll romp away, especially as temperatures are warming up. 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    Great, thanks everyone. I’m going to try a piece in a slightly more shaded part of the garden so hopefully it takes and does as well as it did in the sunnier bed.

    You are most welcome and you won't be disappointed in changing its position to one more shaded. It will settle there very well.

    A timely questions @Wildlifelover as I was thinking exactly the same thing about our Geraniums that I have just cut back.  Only bought them last year, and am keen to double my stock of each variety.

    Would this apply to other perennials too? My Polemonium 'Lambrook mauve' has had its flowered stems cut back and has grown much larger than I anticipated so needs moving really as it's having an impact on nearby plants.
