Holes in magnolia leaves

I have my first ever garden and planted 2 magnolia trees earlier this year, they have so far been very happy with flowers in spring and growing well. The leaves now seem to have lots of holes appearing so I am guessing something is eating them. I cannot see any obvious bugs on the trees or leaves so don't know the cause. Does anyone know what it could be and advise me how to stop the pest?

Hello @Hopeful gardener  and welcome to the forum :)

I don't know what's nibbled those holes, but I don't think it's anything to worry about.  That's not very much damage.  There are all sorts of creatures out there who have a nibble or two and move on ... there's never a tree or shrub that's perfect ... thats the wonderful world of wildlife  :)

I would clear a larger circle free from grass around the base of your magnolias ... that way there's less opportunity for creatures to lurk or over-winter beneath your tree, which will safeguard them a bit.

    Hope that helps  :)
