Honey fungus?

I think we have honey fungus in our garden but am struggling to find evidence. Our privet hedge died suddenly last year and our ceanothus has just died after flowering; I know both of these are highly susceptible.

I dug up both and destroyed the roots of both but could not find any ‘bootlaces’ or fungus material between the bark and wood. The only unusual evidence (aside from the sudden death!) were pinkish circular rings on some of the dead ceanothus branches as per the photos.

Does anyone know what this might be? Is it a honey fungus symptom or something different?
