Something wrong with my Choisya

Hello,

Last year I planted a small Choisya Ternata Sundance in a South facing wall. It liked it a lot and produced lots of new growth since then. This is up until March this year where for various reasons I had to move it.

I moved it to my front garden, sunny West facing, clay soil (previous spot was also clay but less heavy). It didn't do well at the beginning, the colour was really faded, holes on leaves.. and I figured it was the cold, dry April we had. In May when it got wetter it started to produce some new growth so I was happy.

However it is bad again now and this is how it looks like now. There is something weird on the base of the stems as you can see.

No idea what do to now.. Thanks!

Something has chewed the base.. mice, voles?

It definitely looks like mechanical damage at the base. As well as an animal source, could it have been caught by a strimmer or spade? Not sure what the solution is - maybe take some cuttings in case it doesn't survive?

Perhaps you could cover that damage at the base, to reduce the risk of disease or pests getting in ?
