Apple Trees - Feeding

edited July 2021 in Fruit & veg
Hi all,

I wonder if someone could help with the below query?

I have 12 apple trees in my orichsrd (mixture of eating and cooking).  They've been planted for about 5-6 years with little maintenance.  Unfortunately, they're were quite small with very little blossom and no apples.  So towards of end of last winter I decided to starting feeding them.  I've been giving them blood, fish and bone (NPK 393) every 5 weeks and some sulphate of potash every 5 weeks (not at the same time as the BFB).  All seems to be going very well.  They blossomed for the first time a couple of months back and they looked amazing and the apples are coming along fine.  So my question is when do i stop feeding the trees or do I keep on going through the summer and autumn?

Many thanks 👍

  • Thanks for the reply.  I did have a clear area around the trees, but the grass is coming back with a vengeance, so I've been trimming it back.  This is a bit tricky and each tree is fenced to stop the sheep eating them.  Also I did make a school boy error and forgot to do a soil PH test before I started feeding.  The ground itself isn't sandy but it is fairly poor hence the poor growth so far.  So if i was to stop feeding now when would I start again?  Also while I've got your attention, should I be looking to apply a mulch to stop the trees drying out?

    Thanks again
  • Many thanks again.  I have sheep everywhere, the disadvantage of living in mid Wales where we have more sheep than people 😂
