Magnolia daphne

Hi, I planted a Magnolia Daphne about three months ago, and used food around the roots as suggested. It flowered brilliantly and seems to be thriving but this past few weeks the leaves are turning black and shrivelling up. A few new flowers came out last week, so I thought it was ok but I’ve just noticed that there are green patches on the petals of the flowers. Any advise would be greatly appreciated, I’m not sure what has happened to it! Thanks

Tricky to tell what the problem is, unfortunately.  A couple of young magnolia here have similar looking leaves, which was down to the late frosts and lack of water during the unusual hot period we had in early spring.  Another possibility is that it is over-fed - what did you use around the roots?
I wouldn't worry about the green on the flower as late flowers often don't develop fully.
I would give it plenty of water from now until it goes dormant, at least 15l a week and more in hot or dry weather.  If it has been over-fed, giving lots of extra water will help leach that away.

  • I used miracle grow continuous release food for azalea camellia and rhododendron, sprinkled in and around the roots when I planted. Il try that then, plenty of water and hopefully it comes ok! Thank you for your help!
