Does anyone know what this is?

  It kind of reminds me of a type of cup fungus but it looks a bit more ragged around the edges than I would have seen them before.

  Perhaps something has been eating it? Do you know if cup fungus is good or bad for nearby plants?

  I think you'll be OK but; if worried, you could maybe remove the visible fungus before it spores and starts a whole new cycle.

  They feed on dead material from what I have read and seeing them in my own garden they did not cause any problem to the plants near to where they were growing. They are probably good for plants in helping free up nutrients in the soil for them to grow better.
