Clematis leaf discoloration: advice needed

Canary27Canary27 Posts: 24
I'm a bit worried about the leaf discoloration affecting this clematis ('Sweet Summer Love' one of the flammula group). Does anyone know what's causing it? and whether I should do anything?

At the moment it is only affecting the lower leaves, but I don't want it to get worse.
The plant seems pretty vigorous, and the upper part is OK at the moment (as seen below).

It's in a pot - a deep one - which it shares with some night flowering stocks (I wouldn't have thought they were competing too much, but perhaps I'm wrong). Any advice gratefully received.

Probably just a touch of sun or wind burn, the weather has been so topsy truvy that plants haven't been able to adapt gradually. Keep it well watered and perhaps add a little shading for the youngest leaves if we get a scorcher :)

I agree.  Keep it well watered and, since it's in a pot, give it a weekly feed of liquid tomato fertiliser which will promote good flowering.   Clematis are hungry, thirsty plants and will repay good watering and feeding with plentiful blooms and, with flammula, perfume too.

Thanks guys. I'll follow your advice. The problem seems to be reasonably localised, and stable, at the moment. I've been growing it for 3 years (increasing the pot size every year). I look forward to the day when it finally flowers, and I get to smell that perfume!
