  • Hi. It's difficult to tell from the photos but I wonder if they are unhappy in their pots and have turned brown because they got too dry, were too wet, or perhaps been exposed to cold drying winds in winter or hot, drying winds in summer?

This RHS page on conifer care may help you narrow down the cause of the problem. https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=132

I'd say those have got seriously dried out. Wind dries plants out quickly too.
Those can't go short of water or they'll suffer very quickly, especially as they're quite large specimens. The foliage simply can't take up enough moisture.
In pots, and in hot, dry conditions, they'd need very regular watering - almost every day probably. A terracotta pot also dries out very quickly, as it absorbs a lot of the moisture. They'd also need to be in a good, soil based medium, refreshed each year, and not just compost. If they're only in that, they'll dry out more quickly too. Compost is no use for long term planting.  :)

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

They grow very, very tall quite quickly in the ground. Just saying.....
