Trimming perennials

Hello,

Is it ok to give my perennials a little trim where they are over growing other plants? Some have grown larger than expected so despite giving them space at the time of planting (last autumn / this spring), they’ve started to grow over each other a little too much.

Its mostly hardy geraniums, Polemonium caeruleum, Geums and a Dianthus.

If it is ok to trim, should I take off just on the side(s) in question or a bit all over?

 Thanks.

I do if needed - seems to do no harm.
And if anything flops over onto the lawn it gets put in a vase or mown over.

As soon as my hardy geraniums finish flowering I cut everything back to the ground, then you get nice new foliage in a few weeks and maybe another flush of flowers

We do trim back after flowering and this gives us extended flowering period.
    Always worth the cut back.
