Pruning a Tamarix tree

I have a spring flowering Tamarix tree.  Last October my gardener decided to hard prune it saying that it was the right time of year to do it! Consequently this spring I had no foliage and no flowers. I now have foliage on it and know that it should be pruned after the flowering period. Should I prune off the new growth now or leave it until it has flowered next May/June?

Leave it.  Spring flowering shrubs and trees flower on wood produced in the previous growing season so leave it be so that the new growth matures enough to flower next year.  You could maybe do a bit of light pruning just to improve the shape and remove any dead, diseased or damaged stems but that's all.

You can look up many plants on the RHS website and that will give you info on the best soil, aspect, shelter, hardiness, propagation and pruning timing and methods to use.   If your tamairsk needs pruning in future it should be immediately after flowering finishes so the plant has time to heal the wounds and direct energy to the likeliest branches for future flowering and seeding.
