What’s Wrong With My Dracena Marginata?

Hello,

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to move my dracena outside to enjoy some of this summer weather. Prior to moving it, I believe it was a healthy plant. The leaves rarely fell off or had any discolouration. There were, however, some pesky fruit flies in the soil (noticed about 8 months ago).

Last week, quite a few of the lower leaves rapidly turned yellow, so I removed them. This was a fairly big die off, but the plant still has a lot of leaves. Today, I noticed that these strange white marks had developed on about a dozen of the leaves. This must’ve happened over the span of a couple of hours, as they weren’t there when I checked on the plant in the morning. It was quite sunny today, so I moved it to a shadier spot. I’ve increased the amount of watering since moving it outside, as it’s been fairly warm/hot in recent weeks.

I watered the plant last evening, as the pot was quite light and the soil seemed dry enough to warrant some moisture. Upon further inspection today, I saw and removed about 6 little white bugs (a little larger than the size of a pinhead). Not sure if there’s a connection, or if they are harmless outdoor bugs.

Does anyone think these problems could be related to a watering issue? Or possibly too much sun?

Thank you!

You've sunburned your plant.  To go from a nice interior shaded location to direct sunlight is too much for the cells in the leaves, causing them to burn and die.  Wind evaporation could cause the lower leaves to die back immaturely as well, as the plant focuses on saving the newer leaves.

Thank you! I have moved the plant to a shadier area. Hopefully that will help.
