Great thank you all, how much grit should I incorporate?
Then when filling them is it just a case of making a kind of topsoil/compost lasagne and forking the layers together as I go? Or does it need to be mixed together more properly than that before it goes in? Sorry I did say complete novice
We’re just building a pergola, any recommendations on some climbers to go up the posts?
If you can do it try and mix the topsoil and compost together as you go. I like your description of lasagne layering 50/45/5 (topsoil/compost/grit) mixture though it isn't critical Roberts91. It could be that your topsoil is gritty enough. Another way to incorporate the grit is just to add it to the planting holes when you are putting your plants in. Climbers for your pergola include the Clematis montana I mentioned before, a golden hop would be very pretty. Avoid ivy and definitely avoid Russian vine (major thug). I've avoided mentioning roses as an inquisitive youngster may get prickled though there are thornless varieties. The golden hop and clematis montana are easy plants for beginners
