    Wow Lyn, that's a lot of hydrangeas!  Thank you both for taking the time to reply.  I don't think moving mine is an option, it's between other shrubs and I don't want to rock the boat, lol.  I've been out this afternoon and have cut off most of the horrible bits and there are new shoots further down, so I'll give it a good drink and keep my fingers crossed.  Thanks again.

    I’m sure it will be fine, nothing’s perfect in the garden, if it’s still going bad in a few weeks time, please post again and we can have another look.
