I do not like French Marigolds - remind me of 1970s orange naff, HOWEVER, I do have some under my tomatoes this year (trying them out) and they are being great decoys.
There’s not much I don’t like but many plants are improved by their setting, neighbour plants and healthiness.
I partly agree re roses - one of the most beautiful flowers on a plant which is an ugly nightmare.
I forgot to include Heather's in a garden... fine where they Are supposed to be but in a cement block rockery.....yuck! I think I'm describing most of Felixstowes front gardens.
I think it's just as well there are some plants I don't like or I would need a bigger garden. I just lifted 20 iris just to make time for more plants!!
I like nearly all flowering plants. I don't like grasses, look like weeds to me.
My garden is quite poorly drained so I tend to like plants that do well in wet soils - having said that if I could I'd love a seaside gravel garden with grasses, thrift etc. I'd really like to visit Derek Jarmans garden one day.
Controversial, but I'd have to put 80% of roses into the 'don't like' camp. A rose garden planted with different coloured roses in bare soil looks revolting to me but it's what many people think of as the epitome of a beautiful garden. However... there are many truly lovely roses, including species roses and their hybrids. And roses can look fabulous mixed in with other plants, which can make up for their weak spots. (And their black spots lol).
I've got to throw all variegated euphorbias in the bin too, they always seem to look frazzled to me. I'm not mad on variegation generally either but it can be okay. I prefer non variegated hostas and grasses by far. But I do like spotted laurel (Aucuba). It's unexciting but inoffensive and reliable.
"What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour".
Yep, roses, especially the doubles, they are so blousy and although I have many in my garden, because Mr head gardener likes them, they make me bristle.
