Carrots are fragile beings and really prefer warm, soft sandy soil, no lumps thank you, which has not been manured. Warm weather with not tooo much wtaer or rain. I tried growing some in a cold frame last year with great success. Have been very late sowing them this year, only yesterday, so I will wait to see what happens. My main problem is that my cat likes to sleep in the cold frame as soon as I put the old shower partition over it to protect the carrots. Her very own mini sauna room. A few years ago I grew some wonderful carrots in an old kitchen unit which I laid on its back, minus the back and doors etc. I filled it with very sandy soil and had lovely crops, until the unit rotted and fell apart.
