Moving a clematis 'Hyde Hall'

I am looking for some advice from the helpful gardeners on this site.  I have a clematis 'Hyde Hall' which is not doing well.  It is about 8-9 years old and has always produced some leaves and a few flowers but very weak overall.  Clematis generally do not do well in my garden (Cornwall) but mostly do much better than this one.  It is at the back of a large mixed border and I think it might be overwhelmed.  It has a great personal value to me and I wonder if it is possible to move such a mature plant - if so, when would be the best time?  I have attempted cuttings with no success so far but I will try again.  Has anyone else had success with clematis cuttings?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice received.

Glad it’s not just me then,  they don’t grow well here either.
I tried to move one,  I’ve never seen so many roots on a plant, they went for miles I’m sure!  Needless to say, it hasn’t taken, a lot of the roots broke.
Maybe if you just cut the plant down to about 6” from the ground and put a load of mulch around it,  then give it loads of rain water,   do you have any home made compost?
My daughter is expert at cuttings,  if you’re  near St Austell she may be able to help you.
She lives in the Clay country, maybe they like that soil, I think my soil is too acid for them.

  • Thanks Lyn - I do have some home made compost and we have heavy rain forecast for tomorrow.  I will clear an area around it first and then mulch after the rain.  Won't do anything drastic yet!
