What is this?!

Heard a buzzing sound round my desk earlier and this insect/ beetle seemed to be the culprit. What is it ? Should I let it free into the garden, or in a nearby field if you think it will be up to no good? Thanks in advance.

Looks like a rose chafer to me. Adult rose chafers can be a problem on roses and other flowering plants where they feed on the petals. The larval grubs are however beneficial to the soil as they help in the decomposition of plant material and contribute to the natural composting process.
It always makes me happy when I hear them motoring away through the air.

Definitely agree - rose chafer. Amazing looking creatures, such a beautiful colour. Haven't seen one for several years, sadly!

That’s great to know thank you. I was dead heading some peony shrubs yesterday afternoon and another two took to the air so there’s presumably something in or around the garden that appeals to them.
