I put them in the garden waste bin, which is emptied fortnightly. If the odd one escapes and returns to where I scooped it up from, fair play to it. The trip would be between 10-20m.
I marked the shells of the Brians with Tipp-ex last year. Didn't find one that escaped back into the garden
A fun experiment for children is to show off that homing sense. I use a lepoard slug as they are so large and I can also show that not all slugs are bad, but a big common garden snail should do.
Get your slug from it's daytime hiding place, move it as far away as you can in your garden, then draw a line in between it and it's home with salt. Don't hit the slug! watch it walk (slime?) round the line and return home.
