Is it too late for nasturtium seeds

Hey all

At the start of the month I realised I hadn’t put much effort into flowers this year (focussed on veg) so I looked through the Marshalls website for seeds that could be started in June. I ordered some nasturtium seeds but they aren’t here yet.

My query today is that the nasturtium seeds say to sow outdoors until June. With July nearly here, and the seeds not arrived, am I likely to see flowers from the nasturtiums this year if I plant them in the last few days of June, or shall I leave them for this year?

Below is the advertised growing calendar

Thanks!

I stuck a few into gaps recently where a few hadn't germinated. They're coming through now.
Might be worth sowing some and keeping the rest for next year.  :)

    That's what I'd do.
My self seeders only popped up recently. With any luck they'll last until October.

  • Thanks for the advice.

I also ordered Sweet Pea Cherub seeds and Stocks Virginia Stardust seeds which have a longer “sow outdoors” period. Would I be better to focus entirely on them as the newbies or would you still plant some nasturtium seeds?

I only grow the larger sweet peas - I'm assuming that's a dwarf variety?
I'd have thought it's a bit late for those too, but no harm in having a go. I'd think the later sowings  would flower next year though. It seems odd that they're saying to sow in July August etc. May would be about the latest you'd sow for flowers this year.

I don't grow stocks, so can't advise on them.

Stocks germinate  pretty quickly so you should be ok with them.

You will be fine to sow nasturtium now, they sprout quickly and mine were still flowering in October last year, including several self seeders from that year.

I don't buy nasturtium seeds anymore, I rely on them to self seed which they do in abundance.  They are only just starting to appear now and will flower well in to Autumn, so you'll be absolutely fine.  You'll have plenty next year too!

Yes, nasturtiums will be fine sown now. I often continue to sow them as late as August for my tortoise to eat and they put on a good late show until the first really hard frost.
