Bayleaf leaf droop

I have a bayleaf in a pot about 3.5 feet high probably 6-7 years old. It's suddenly suffering from drooping leaves but no discolouration. It's not been moved since I bought it save for increasing pot size but not recently. What can be making the leaves droop please?

Is it the new growth or the older leaves (or both)?

Hi there, drooping leaves can be a sign of overwatering - Bay trees don't like to have their roots sitting in water.  Try raising the pot up to let any excess water drain out and allow the surface of the compost to feel dry before watering again.  If this doesn't help, you may need to repot or refresh the compost in the existing pot.

What sort of compost mix is it planted in?

I would lift it out of the pot and check to see if the soil is damp everywhere.  If the medium is old it could have dried out in places and it's often impossible to then get it to take up moisture.

I do this every year with mine.  Lift it out. Knock off as much potting medium as I can and then refresh it.  John Innes 3 seems to be working a treat with mine. And keep it well watered especially when it's hot and dry.  Mine is a thirsty beast.

Do you have a pic of tree and pot?

Of course it could also be the dreaded weevil but you can check for grubs if/when you lift it out to have a look at the state of the soil....
  • What sort of compost mix is it planted in?it's old compost so I think I'm going to change it and also see if I can get a bigger pot
