Lawn advice

Hoping someone can help. I took the below photos about a month apart. The top one is today. Just wondering if anyone can tell me how to get rid of the brown patches. We moved in this year so can't be sure but there was probably an old path under the brown strip in the middle. It's hard to tell from the photo but the rest is starting to brown too.
The whole lawn is quite compacted and water sits for a little while before draining away.
Any lawn care tips for a novice gardener appreciated!

If you have the energy, try spiking it all over with a garden fork. Stick the tines in vertically as deep as you can, give it a little forward and backward wiggle, then pull it out and repeat something like every 4 inches/10cm. If it was mine I'd probably just do the brown strip (in my garden I do the strip under the washing line and the route to the compost bin every spring, because that's where it gets walked on in winter when it's wettest, and gets a bit compacted).

Yeah mine was like this when I cut it for the first time (we’ve moved in here this year). I got an aerator from screw fix and did the whole lawn. I sprinkled some feed and seed on it afterwards and a month later it looks so much better.
