I saw this plant at the allotment yesterday.

Based on my online search, it’s a kind of ‘peony-form poppy’ (papaver somniferum var. paeoniflorum) that flowers for three months.

Has anyone grown this before? Does it really flower for three months?

I have grown similar, If I remember rightly I think about 3 weeks was more like it. They were beautiful though. They self seeded for a few years then I lost them.
  • Thanks @ditsy. I guess 3 weeks is still good.

    I like the foliage too.

I planted irises for the first time this year… they flowered for a week. Blink and you miss them. Lessons for the impatient novice gardener.

There's one of those just opening in my garden. A few weeks is all it'll flower for, and only then if we don't get windy weather. The petals drop really easily.

Mine lasted for just 2 days before it was shorn of the petals.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)

  • If this is the case… on what bases can it say flowers for 3 months on the seed pack?!

Flowers about three months from sowing. Each flower lasts about 3 days.

The charts on seed packets tell you the period during which it is likely to flower but not for how long.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

    Thanks for clarifying this.

Successive sowings over 3 months would potentially give you 3 months of flowers
