What is wrong with my carrots!

Hi, completely new to growing vegetables and I can't find what is wrong here or what has caused this issue with my carrots. Appears to be growing out of the soil, please help!!??

    It looks like your soil isn't fine enough carrots need a very fine soil and not to rich, it looks  very much as though they are trying  to force themselves down but are coming out on to. Try pushing them down to see if that helps.

    Thank you! We have had some hard rain lately and I wondered whether that had compressed the soil, i'll try what you say and next time get a finer soil too.

    I've grown them successfully in containers filled with a 50/50 mix of sharp sand and multi-purpose compost.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
